Ads in Google AI Mode and Maps: What Small Business Advertisers Should Know

Google announced new ad formats for AI Mode and Demand Gen ads on Maps. Here is what that means for a small business.

At Google Marketing Live 2026, Google announced new ad formats for AI Mode, and Demand Gen ads that can show on Google Maps. For a local business, the Maps ads may matter most. Google has shared few details about timing or where these ads will be available. So treat this as a heads up, not a to-do list.

What Google Announced

Google said it is building new ad formats for AI Mode that change based on what a person asks. It also announced AI Max for Search campaigns, with a new tool called AI Brief that lets advertisers guide the AI. And Demand Gen ads are coming to Google Maps, to help turn local discovery into store visits.

Google’s own page did not list start dates, prices, or which countries get these first. We will update this post when Google shares more.

What It Means for a Local Business

Maps ads may fit stores, restaurants, and shops that people visit in person. Service businesses, like plumbers or electricians, may care more about search ads and Local Services Ads. Read about that change in Local Services Ads Are Moving Into Google Ads.

Be careful with more automation. When AI decides more, you may have less control over where your ads show. That is not always bad, but it means you should watch results closely.

What to Do Now

  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete and correct, because Maps ads will point people to it.
  • Track phone calls and leads, not just clicks.
  • If you test a new ad type, start small and compare it to what already works.
  • Ask your agency which new options are available for your account.

Conclusion

Google is adding ads to AI Mode and Google Maps, but the details are still thin. Keep your profile and website strong, and test new ad types slowly. At JPG Designs, we watch these changes so our clients do not have to. Contact us to talk about your ad plan.
