A featured snippet quotes one web page. An AI Overview is a short summary that Google writes using information from several sources. You do not have to pick one. Pages that give clear, direct answers can help with both. Here is how they differ, and what to write.
How They Are Different
A featured snippet is a box near the top of the results. It shows a short answer pulled from one page, with a link to that page. An AI Overview is a longer summary written by AI, with links to the sources it used. Google decides when to show each one, and you cannot turn either on.
We covered the older kind in How to Get Your Website in Google’s Featured Snippets. The basics there still help, but AI results add a new layer.
What to Write for Both
- Use the customer’s question as a heading, in the words they would use.
- Answer it in the first sentence or two, in plain language.
- Add details below the answer, like steps or a short list.
- Keep facts true and up to date, like your hours, areas, and services.
- Add schema where it fits. Our schema markup handbook explains how.
What to Measure
Do not chase a box for its own sake. Watch the calls and form leads that come from your pages. You can use the regular Performance report in Search Console to see which pages get seen. Some sites also have new reports for AI features, which we cover in Search Console’s New AI Reports.
No one can promise a snippet or an AI mention. Google picks them. The best plan is to keep writing clear answers to real questions.
Conclusion
Featured snippets and AI Overviews both reward pages that answer questions clearly. Write the question, answer it fast, add helpful details, and keep your facts correct. Then measure leads, not boxes. If you want help with your pages, contact JPG Designs and we will take a look.
